Industrial cooling and ventilation in Manchester

Manchester is now more distribution than mill, though both remain. Trafford Park is still one of the largest industrial estates in Europe, mixing food manufacturing, chemicals, packaging and engineering with newer logistics units; Stakehill and Heywood Distribution Park to the north, Sharston and Wythenshawe to the south, and Bredbury and Openshaw closer in carry warehousing, print, plastics and technical textiles. The stock runs from Victorian brick with poor cross ventilation to modern portal frame sheds of 12 to 15 metres. Given this climate nobody needs mechanical cooling for most of the year, but pickers and machine operators do need air moved across them, and in winter the heat sitting under the roof is worth pushing back down before more gas is burned.

Manchester climate — the honest version

Manchester is mild and wet, with high humidity and few hot days, so cooling is almost never the requirement and the money is better spent on air movement, destratification and ventilation.

Shipments land at Felixstowe or Southampton roughly 20 to 26 days out of Nhava Sheva or Mundra, then travel north by road to Trafford Park, Heywood or Stockport in under a day.

Worth knowing locally

  • Supply is 400 V three phase 50 Hz, and the VFD on each HVLS fan allows a very low winter setting that mixes air without any perceptible draught over pick faces.
  • CE, IEC, LVD and EMC certificates and the technical file are supplied so the importer can complete UKCA marking; O and M manuals are provided for the building file.
  • Older Trafford Park and Salford units have low eaves and cluttered roof steelwork, so a site survey with drop lengths and obstruction heights should come before the fan diameter is fixed.

Ask on WhatsApp
Can HVLS fans cut heating bills in a Manchester warehouse?

In a tall heated shed, yes. Warm air rises and sits at the ridge, so heaters run longer to satisfy a thermostat at floor level. Running the fan slowly mixes that layer back down, evens the temperature through the height of the building and lets the heating cycle less over a long northern winter.

Is air cooling ever worth installing in the North West?

Rarely for a whole building. There are only a handful of genuinely hot weeks, and the humid maritime air limits what evaporative equipment can achieve anyway. For occasional heat we suggest a mobile fan for local relief, and we would not recommend a ducted evaporative system for a Manchester shed.

How is a fan chosen for a Victorian mill conversion or low eaves unit?

By survey. Older Manchester buildings have beams, sprinkler runs and lighting at awkward heights, so we work from clear height under the lowest obstruction and the minimum blade to floor distance. That often points to two or three smaller diameter fans rather than one large unit in the centre.
